In the Book of Genesis 1:28 we learn that God establishes Humankind as “stewards” of the Earth and all of its inhabitants.

Ecclesiastes Rabba 7:13 reminds us of the import of this responsibility:

The Holy One led Adam (Humankind) through the Garden of Eden and said, “I created all My

beautiful and glorious works for your sake.  Take heed not to corrupt and destroy My world.

For if you corrupt it, there is no one to make it right after you.”

Our Community affirms that authentic prayer and learning to be actualized must give rise to deeds.  Tachlis, it is not enough to believe, we must do.  Turn Temple Green is our new Committee actively engaged in guiding and supporting our Congregation to live according to our Jewish Convictions.

As “stewards” of the earth, Temple is Turning Green.  We are urging all members to be aware of our efforts and to explore the ways that you can support your Community of Faith to live in balance with our values and in balance with the earth.

When you are at Temple, please keep the following in mind and help us Turn Temple Green:

RECYCLE YOUR PAPER:  Today at Temple we are making a concerted effort to RECYCLE.  As we celebrate, study and worship together, let’s all make the effort to use the Recycle Bins that have been placed throughout the Temple, in the Office and in the Hebrew School Wing.

USE TEMPLE PLATES, SILVERWARE & GLASSWARE WHENEVER POSSIBLE: In the kitchen, in addition to cooking and serving utensils, there are plates, silverware and glassware for over a hundred people.  When you, your family, your committee and/or your event is planning to make use of the kitchen, please plan to use them.  This will require your planning on clean up time & effort.

USE THE DISHWASHER IN THE KITCHEN: Clear simple directions for the dishwasher are posted in the kitchen.  Please place two dishwasher racks on the kitchen cart for individuals to deposit their kitchen ware after eating along with a compost bucket and a garbage can near the rack cart.  The cart can be wheeled into the kitchen and the dishwasher racks fit on the large sink providing easy rinsing for all dirty dishes & utensils before placing the rack in the dishwasher.

RECYCLE YOUR PLASTICS:  If you must use disposables, please make the effort to recycle.  In the kitchen there is a blue bin for Recyclable Plastics & Metal.  Please rinse the object that you have used BEFORE placing it in the Recycle Bin.

COMPOST: Temple is Composting. Please use the Compost Bucket provided in the Kitchen.

What can be composted?

Vegetable & fruit scraps, coffee grounds & filters, egg shells, tea bags (remove any staples or tags), bread, pasta or other starches (with no sauces or oils), nut shells, corn cobs & husks

What foods should NOT be composted?

Do NOT put meat, dairy, fish, bones or fatty foods (such as cheese, salad dressing & leftover cooking oil)

Other compostable items

Clean cotton, wool or linen rags, natural (no dye color) string or rope, non bleached dye-free paper towels & napkins (no oil or sauce on them)

Indoor Procedure:

Put compost waste (as established in above guidelines) into bucket.  When the bucket is full, take it to the composter outside the double French Doors in the Social Hall and follow the posted composting instructions.

TURN OFF THE LIGHTS: You can make the difference.  PLEASE, turn off the lights throughout the building, each time you leave a room.

SUPPORT TEMPLE USING GREEN PRODUCTS: Temple is committed to increasing our usage of Ecologically Safe & Responsible Cleaning Products and supplies.  Your Commitment to this reality can be made by dropping your change in the Turn Temple Green Collection Jug sitting in the Lobby.

SUPPORT TEMPLE REPLACING LIGHTS WITH ENERGY EFFICIENT BULBS: Temple is committed to purchasing Energy Efficient Bulbs.  As the present bulbs wear out, we are replacing the bulbs throughout the Temple Building with Energy Efficient Replacements.  Your Commitment to this reality can be made by dropping your change in the Turn Temple Green Collection Jug sitting in the Lobby.
